Size of AwardThe Voluntary Renewable Resources Fund was established by the Maine Legislature in 2000 and is supported by contributions made by consumers on their electric bill. Grants are allocated to small-scale demonstration projects designed to educate the community on the value and cost-effectiveness of harnessing natural resources for clean electricity. Organizations eligible to receive funding include Maine-based nonprofit organizations, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, and quasi-municipal corporations.

Grants of up to $50,000 are awarded to qualifying projects. Eligible technologies include biomass energy and/or municipal solid waste. Projects must be under 100 MW in capacity or qualify as a small power production facility under Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rules.

Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis.
