Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

Field Science

The NEIC has several mapping-grade global positioning system (GPS) units including the Trimble GeoXT which is designed to use and collect GIS data in the field. Topographic maps, overhead imagery, and vector data can be viewed or updated in the field during site investigations using these GPS systems. The GeoXT also allows digital images, voice recordings, and notes to be collected along with locational features. NEIC's GPS capabilities allow investigators to effectively communicate important case elements in a spatial context. Further developments include the addition of more geographic data resources, advancement of multimedia integration, and incorporation of GPS with field instrumentation.
