Integrated Management Systems for Water and Wastewater Utilities

Water and wastewater utilities are facing a number of challenges brought on by aging physical infrastructure, increased pressure from rateholders to operate more efficiently, and improve environmental performance. A number of management programs are being used by these organizations, but there is clear need to help utility managers understand how to integrate these programs under a management system that uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology embodied in EMSs.

Recognizing this need, the Office of Water, in cooperation with the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies (AMSA)Exit EPA Disclaimer, recently produced a guide, Continual Improvement in Utility Management: A Framework for Integration (PDF)Exit EPA Disclaimer(128 pp, 1 M, About PDF) to help these utilities understand how this integration can occur.
