NRC Recommendations Workshop
UPDATE: Registration for the IRIS NRC Recommendations Workshop is now open. EPA invites you to nominate scientific experts in systematic review, evidence integration, or dose-response analysis to participate in workshop discussions. Nominations should be provided no later than September 4, 2014. The workshop agenda will be posted by mid-September. You may also provide feedback on the discussion questions at any time using our blog post. This will allow the discussion to begin before the workshop convenes.
EPA is planning a public workshop to discuss some specific recommendations from the National Academies' National Research Council's May 2014 report on further improving the scientific quality of IRIS assessments. In their report, the NRC commended EPA for its substantive new approaches, continuing commitment to improving the process, and successes to date. They noted that the program has moved forward steadily in planning for and implementing changes in each element of the assessment process. They also provided several recommendations which they said should be seen as building on the progress that EPA has already made. This workshop will allow EPA to get input from the public and scientific community about specific topics related to the NRC's May 2014 recommendations. These discussions will inform the IRIS Program's work as it develops IRIS assessments and advances the science of risk assessment. The workshop will be open to the public, broadcast by webinar/teleconference, and will take place in Arlington, VA.
The IRIS NRC Recommendations Workshop will be held at the EPA Conference Center in Arlington, Virginia on October 15-16, 2014. If you are unable to attend this workshop in person, please consider registering to attend via the webinar/teleconference. To keep you informed regarding IRIS Program updates, all attendees who register for this event will also be added to the IRIS mailing list. If you decide that you do not want to receive these updates, you can unsubscribe from the mailing list at any time.
Registration for attendance: Registration for in-person attendance will be limited to the first 100 registered participants due to space availability. In-person registration closes on October 8, 2014. To encourage participation by people who cannot travel to the meeting site, we will also conduct the meeting as a webinar. For planning purposes, the public is also encouraged to register for participation via webinar by October 8, 2014. However, registration to attend by webinar will remain open until the conclusion of the workshop.

The IRIS NRC Recommendations Workshop will be held in the EPA Conference Center which is located at One Potomac Yard (South Tower Building) on the 1st Floor. The street address is 2777 South Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia 22202 (see the map to the right).
Only individuals registered for in-person attendance will be allowed into the EPA building to attend this event.
EPA Facility Access: To enter the facility, you must check in at the guard's desk (no more than 1 hour before the meeting) in the building lobby with your photo identification. Please Note: New ID Requirements for Visitors Whose State Driver’s License Do Not Comply with the REAL ID Act. Effective July 21, 2014, under the REAL ID Act requirements, not all state-issued driver’s licenses are acceptable as photo ID for security purposes. In EPA headquarters buildings (including the Potomac Yard buildings), driver’s licenses from the following states/territory, which do not comply with the REAL ID Act, will not be accepted as a photo ID: Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, and Washington. (Please note: Enhanced driver’s licenses from Minnesota, New York and Washington are acceptable.) Visitors from these states/territory must present other forms of ID to be permitted entry. Acceptable items are listed below:
One of these items: federal ID (PIV card, similar to an EPASS badge); US passport; permanent resident card (green card); or foreign passport. Or, two of these items (one must include a photograph): ID card issued by federal, state, or local government; school ID; voter registration card; Native American tribal document; social security card; birth certificate; US citizen ID card; student green card; or employment authorization document issued by the Department of Homeland Security. Please allow 10-20 minutes extra time to go through security.

To participate by webinar you will need:
- A computer with internet connection. Adobe Flash is required.
- A speaker/headphones or telephone. Audio will be available through the webinar, and also through a teleconference line if you wish to listen by phone.
- Time: See meeting agenda for specific start/end times.
- Meeting webinar details: The webinar URL and teleconference details will be e-mailed to registered participants prior to the meeting.
The webinar room will be opened 30 minutes prior to the meeting for testing and set up. If you are dialing in, the teleconference line will be opened 10 minutes before the start of the meeting.
Attending an EPA Webinar:
EPA uses Adobe Connect Software for the IRIS webinars with integrated video and sound capabilities. If this is your first online meeting using this software, then you should set up your computer in advance.
- First run the test by visiting http://epa.connectsolutions.com/common/help/en/support/meeting_test.htm. If you fail any portion of the test, please follow instructions to resolve your problem. If you cannot resolve an issue, contact your IT administrator/support group for assistance.
- To attend the webinar, if you are not an EPA employee, you must enter as a "guest." Please identify yourself by supplying your first and last name and organization and/or affiliation. For example, "Jane Doe - GSA"
- Then click the button "Enter Room" to join the meeting. There is an "ask a question" window where you can submit questions to the meeting organizer to read or if you need any other assistance.
