1998 UEP Boston Goals
- Improve the Quality of Life for Urban Residents: Build upon community focus to revitalize open space in neighborhoods including building community gardens on under-utilized or contaminated land.
- Increase Community Capacity Building for Environmental Issues: Continuing to expand the Greater Boston Urban Resource Partnership to strengthen coalitions of community-based organizations and local stakeholders.
- Focus on Deteriorating Urban Housing: Work in coalition with Federal, State, Municipal and community organizations to examine the Boston public housing stock. The financial inability of owners to renovate or maintain property results in physical and environmental hazards which contribute to the high incidence of childhood lead poisoning and asthma.
- Revitalize Urban Wetlands, Seashores, and Waterways: Assist urban partners to restore and maintain urban wetlands, provide public access, and develop appropriate economic development.
- Improve ambient air quality and reduce asthma: Support efforts to promote the use of non-polluting public transit vehicles. Improve Indoor Air Quality: Improve the health of Boston children by facilitating and funding projects and research in indoor air quality and lead paint in older housing stock to reduce the incidence of asthma.
- Industrial Ecology/Economic Development: Promote industrial ecology, pollution prevention, and environmental job training.
