Clean Up Work Underway at Smithfield, R.I. Site

EPA has been working closely with the Rhode Island Dept. of Environmental Management (RI DEM) and local officials during the removal of potentially hazardous materials at the Providence Barrel Site in Smithfield, R.I.
Scituate, R.I. School Selected by EPA for Nearly $15,000 Environmental Education Grant

Schools in Scituate, R.I. were recently awarded a $14,895 environmental education grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Scituate School Department, which received the grant, will use the funds to train teachers and students in 11th and 12th grade in the use of state-of-the-art mapping technologies.

A large Massachusetts-based real estate corporation and nearly two dozen associated entities may be subject to a multi-million dollar penalty for repeatedly violating federal lead paint disclosure laws at properties they own or rent in eleven communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

A new partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont will help decision makers more accurately weigh the costs and benefits of actions that alter ecosystem services -- the goods and services of nature such as clean air and water, erosion and flood control, soil enrichment, and food and fiber.
