NSTAR Power Cable Relocation

EPA in partnership with NSTAR is relocating thirteen submerged NSTAR power cables and installing a new cable in the Acushnet PCB-contaminated sediment. Starting in March 2001, sheet piles were driven into the river creating two corridors extending halfway across the river. A trench was excavated in one corridor while the second received the trench's excavated sediment. A cable conduit was laid along the trench and covered with a one-foot thick concrete protective cap. The inner sheet pile wall was removed and the excavated sediment leveled out over the conduit. The process was repeated on the second half of the river. The cable conduit is in place and the new upgraded-capacity cable is installed and activated. The thirteen power cables will be pulled through the relocated cable conduit and activated in 2003.
