For immediate Release: November 8, 1996; Release # 96-11-3
BOSTON--Hayward Refrigeration Company of New London, New Hampshire has paid a $13,307 penalty to settle alleged past violations of the Clean Air Act. Since being cited in 1993, the company purchased approved chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) recycling equipment, and trained and certified its technicians who service automobile air conditioners, as required by federal stratospheric ozone protection laws.
In settling the case, Hayward Refrigeration Company did not admit liability.
The stratospheric ozone requirements are designed to reduce the risk of releases of certain refrigerants which deplete the upper atmospheric ozone layer. The ozone layer shields the earth's surface from dangerous ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation. In the case brought against Hayward, the EPA did not document any actual releases of refrigerants from illegal activities at the facility.
