Feature: Climate Change Symposium March 15/16 in Boston

The New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers are hosting a major symposium, “Climate Change in New England and Eastern Canada: Impacts and Adaptation Responses,” on March 15 and 16 in Boston.

The conference, at the Suffolk University Law School, will bring together scientists and policy-makers from the U.S. and Canada to explore the scientific understanding of the environmental and economic impacts of climate variability and change on the natural resources in the northeast. Participants – including experts on water resources, forestry management, agriculture, tourism and bio-diversity – will discuss options and develop action strategies for managing adaptation to a change climate.

The symposium is being conducted to support some of the action items in the NEG/ECP Climate Action Plan of 2001. While the plan focuses largely on emission reductions, it also includes components addressing adaptation issues related to climate change.

Results and recommendations from the symposium will be reported to the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers at their next meeting in August 2004. Conference goals include:

  • Providing natural resource managers, policy-makers and other stakeholders a strong base of scientific knowledge about the present and potential impacts of climate change on the region’s natural resources.

  • Exploring examples of management strategies that have been undertaken, as well as considering assessment measures of those actions.

  • Developing recommendations to the New England governors and Eastern Canadian premiers for further action in these areas.
