NHEERL Immunotoxicologist Receives Prestigious SOT Award
Bob Luebke of NHEERL’s Environmental Public Health Division (EPHD) Cardiopulmonary and Immunotoxicology Branch received the Vos Lifetime Career Achievement Award in Immunotoxicology at the March 2014 Society of Toxicology (SOT) Meeting in Phoenix, AZ. The award is the highest offered by SOT’s Immunotoxicology Specialty Section. Nominees are evaluated with respect to the following criteria:
- depth and breadth of scientific contributions and the significance of those contributions in advancing the field of immunotoxicology;
- major influence in the education, training, and mentorship of young scientists in the field of immunotoxicology, including training in government, industry, or academia;
- leadership and service to the immunotoxicology field, including involvement in the specialty section or other meetings and organizations related to immunotoxicology; and
- influence on regulatory and risk and safety assessment decisions related to immunotoxicology.
The achievements of current and former members of the NHEERL immunotoxicology group also have been recognized by the Immunotoxicology Specialty Section for their contributions to the field. Former Vos Award winners include MaryJane Selgrade, retired Chief of the former Immunotoxicology Branch, in 2006 and Ralph Smialowicz, retired investigator from that same branch, in 2011. Ian Gilmour, now EPHD Cardiopulmonary and Immunotoxicology Branch Chief, and Jamie DeWitt, former postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Luebke’s laboratory, received the Immunotoxicology Specialty Section’s Outstanding Young Immunotoxicologist Award in 2002 and 2013, respectively.
