Leaders from Indonesian Province of South Kalimantan (Borneo) Visit GED
NHEERL's Gulf Ecology Division (GED) hosted a 1-day visit on December 13, 2007, by a group of community leaders and government officials from the Indonesian Province of South Kalimantan. The group visited government and academic institutions in Washington, DC, Florida, and Michigan to gain understanding about the sustainable and environmentally friendly utilization of natural resources (South Kalimantan is rich with ore, coal, wetlands, and forests). Research on coastal ecology was of particular interest to the group because the pressures of agriculture and population on wetlands and coastal resources are concerns for South Kalimantan. The visit included greetings and an overview of the division from Director William Benson, research briefings on selected topics—coastal wetlands assessments, Gulf of Mexico hypoxia, and coral reefs—and a trip to a nearby field site to demonstrate techniques developed at GED for rapid condition assessments of coastal wetlands.
