Join the Partnership:
Shippers' Commitment

Stepping out ahead of the curve is courageous and smart.

It takes courage and wisdom to set high goals and standards for your company.  It takes determination to meet or exceed those goals.  Smartway Transport Partners are setting the pace for their industry.  Any company or organization that ships products can join the SmartWay Transport Partnership.

Shippers wishing to join the SmartWay Transport Partnership commit to:

  • Determine the percentage of freight shipped by SmartWay Transport Partnership carriers
  • Measure the greenhouse gas emissions of their freight facility operations using EPA's FLEET Performance Shipper/Logistics Model
  • Increase the percentage of freight shipped by SmartWay Transport Partnership carriers to at least 50%
  • Identify a goal to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from freight facility operations
  • Develop an action plan detailing how each of these goals will be achieved
  • Report progress toward achieving each of these goals to EPA annually

In return, EPA commits to:

  • Increase public awareness of your participation in the SmartWay Transport Partnership through national and regional events, articles, and awards.
  • Provide technical assistance to help you quantify the emissions from your shipping operations
  • Assist you in developing and achieving your goals, working to address challenges, create incentives
  • Provide qualifying partners the SmartWay Transport Partner logo - a symbol of superior environmental achievement

Shippers demonstrating that they are shipping over 50% of their goods with SmartWay Transport Carriers may be eligible to advertise their status using EPA's SmartWay Transport logo.
