Remote Location
Mine Site Telemetry—Fuel Cell
Primary Issue Addressed: Remote LocationSecondary Issues Addressed: Sustainability
Project Site: Susie Mine site, Rimini, Montana
Collaborating Entities: MSE, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), Fuel Cell Technologies, Ltd., Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
Cost Share: EPA, DOE-NETL, and EPRI are providing the fuel cell unit.
Project Description
This project will evaluate the performance of a fuel cell supplied by DOE-NETL as the power source for instrumentation and equipment at a remote mine site. The fuel cell is expected to be a solid-oxide type and to be fed methanol to generate power. It will be installed at the Susie Mine site in Rimini, Montana, and it will power a telemetry system and some equipment making up a portion of a water treatment system intended to treat water flowing from the Susie Mine. The project will evaluate the reliability of the fuel cell as well as environmental emissions under field conditions, particularly in the harsh winter climate of the Rimini area.
Status
As of the end of FY04, only logistical aspects of the fuel cell installation and methanol feed tank installation have been explored. Delivery of the fuel cell has been delayed until some time in FY05.
