Making Life Cycle Data Available via the Internet

Description:

The lack of readily available, quality environmental life cycle inventory (LCI) data is often a barrier to manufacturers, among others, for incorporating life cycle considerations into their decision-making process. While much progress has been made on standardizing and improving the uniformity of the Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, less success has been achieved in increasing the availability of quality life cycle inventory data. Three specific areas of improvement exist to promote the use of LCA in decision-making by U.S. industry, government, and LCI practitioners.

  1. Increase awareness of existing LCI data sets and other data sources applicable to U.S. products, processes, and activities >
  2. Provide direction on how and where to access these LCI data sources
  3. Document the quality of each accessible LCI data source

This project was initiated to create an Internet site, called LCAccess, to provide better awareness of and access to life cycle inventory data sources along with a more comprehensive understanding of their overall quality.
