Studies on the Arsenic Characteristics
of the Residual Material Generated
in RM.1A
ObjectiveThis project’s objective was to obtain information on the composition of residuals produced by arsenic treatment processes and to determine disposal options. AbstractThis project was conducted to answer question #4.2.2. of the Office of Research and Development’s Research Plan for Arsenic in Drinking Water: How can the residuals from arsenic removal plants be effectively managed? Two projects were conducted to obtain information on residuals management and disposal issues. First, a report was prepared that describes the types of the residuals produced by small system water treatment processes and the federal regulations that govern on-site storage, transportation, and disposal of residuals. Included in this report is a summary of the regulations controlling residual disposal requirements for the six states that are expected to have a significant number of arsenic treatment plants. The second study was a performance evaluation of nine water treatment plants. As part of this field study, information was collected on the characteristics of the residuals produced by the treatment processes and the residual disposal methods used by each facility. Toxicity characteristics leaching procedure tests were conducted on the residual samples collected from each plant to determine the hazardous/nonhazardous classification of the wastes. Project StatusFinal Report: Regulations on the Disposal of Arsenic Residuals From Drinking Water Plants (PDF) (47 pp, 155 KB) (EPA/600/R-00/0025) May 2000 – Abstract The performance evaluation plant studies that were described in the research project, "Conduct Laboratory and Field Tests on Control Technology," have been completed, and three reports associated with this study contain information on residuals:
