EPA Collaborates to Advance Technologies for Homeland Security

Through an Inter-Governmental Personnel Act agreement, local Cincinnati Fire and Health Departments will work part-time with EPA's National Homeland Security Research Center (NHSRC) to share expertise and knowledge about homeland security issues.

According to Tim Oppelt, Director of NHSRC, "This agreement is an important step in ensuring that the Environmental Protection Agency's homeland security technical guidance and methods are relevant, appropriate, and effective for use by local emergency responders in Cincinnati and across the county." The agreement provides an opportunity for EPA and Cincinnati officials to work together to test emergency tools and access to the nationwide health community and will facilitate coordination between NHSRC and Cincinnati's emergency response organizations. Through this collaboration, EPA and Cincinnati officials also hope to further the development of a national biological monitoring and analysis system.
