Climate Change and Health Initiative

The Climate Change and Health (CC+H) initiative in OSA supports strategic action on the issue of CC+H within the Agency and coordinates an interagency CC+H effort. With leadership from OSA, an EPA-wide CC+H group consisting of representatives from multiple divisions in OAR, OW, OSWER, OCHPEE and multiple program areas within ORD, has been convened several times. The group has compiled a spreadsheet of CC+H activities across EPA, which they plan to use to develop an EPA framework for CC+H. In the most recent meeting, the group discussed the idea of cross-walking the spreadsheet with the Science Priorities developed through the SPC. By doing so, the group hopes to better understand EPA’s strengths, weaknesses and potential areas for future action. OSA continues to lead this group.

In addition to this cross-EPA endeavor, the CC+H initiative supports an interagency effort. The Chief Scientist, Pai-Yei Whung, co-chairs an ad hoc interagency group coordinated with the Climate Change Science Program that includes several other agencies with health mandates. This group is currently working to produce an inventory of science needs across the executive branch on the human health impacts of climate change, climate change mitigation strategies, and adaptation strategies. The interagency group hopes to produce a full draft document by July 31. The EPA CC+H group has informed the initial stages of this process and will continue to provide input and feedback.
