Water Quality Standards

U.S. EPA Region 5 is located in the central part of the country bounded by the Great Lakes and the Upper Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Protecting surface water quality resources in this part of the country is a collaborative effort involving EPA, States, Tribes, and the public. The purpose of the Water Quality Standards effort in the Region is to ensure that, consistent with the Clean Water Act and Federal regulations, all surface waters have appropriate designated uses, criteria to maintain water quality at a level necessary to protect those uses, and procedures that support antidegradation policies and whatever other general policies are necessary for the proper functioning of State and Tribal water quality management programs. The Water Quality Standards effort is an integral part of EPA's Water Quality Strategy.
