Toa Baja Agrees to Close Landfill; EPA Applauds Puerto Rico Solid Waste Plan

EPA praised the Puerto Rico Solid Waste Management Authority (SWMA) for developing a plan to handle municipal garbage throughout the island and announced it has secured an agreement with the municipality of Toa Baja to close its landfill.  This is the fifth order issued by EPA requiring a landfill in Puerto Rico to close since 2007.

Five Puerto Rico Municipalities Get a Brownfields Boost

EPA Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg was in Puerto Rico to announce a total of $2 million in grants to five municipalities in Puerto Rico as part of the Brownfields Program. The funding will be used by the local governments to identify and assess sites that can be cleaned up and redeveloped.
