Earth Day 2008 Frequent Questions
1. Which organization is responsible for running Earth Day?
Earth Day belongs to the public. It isn't run by any one group and there is no official Earth Day headquarters. Several large non-profit groups and coalitions gather information on Earth Day events and organize Earth Day activities taking place across the country, but no single group has been designated as the official Earth Day organization. Within EPA, each EPA Regional office is organizing its own activities as is EPA Headquarters.
2. When did Earth Day start and who started it?
The first Earth Day occurred in 1970. The person considered to be the 'father' of Earth Day is Senator Gaylord Nelson. He worked closely with a group of environmental activists, including Denis Hayes, to organize the first Earth Day.
3. Is there an official theme?
There is no one official theme for Earth Day because there is no single Earth Day organization making that determination. Some organizations and coalitions decide on their own themes and encourage others to use that theme.
4. Is there an official Earth Day logo?
There is no official Earth Day logo because there is no single Earth Day organization making that determination. The EPA logo is not the Earth Day logo. Some organizations and coalitions develop their own logos and use them on all their materials and products. EPA Region III does not have an Earth Day logo.
5. Is there an official date for Earth Day?
Because the first Earth Day was April 22, 1970, Earth Day is generally accepted to be on April 22 each year. Earth Day activities often take place in the days preceding or following that date. This year, EPA Region III and many other organizations have events planned throughout the month of April.
6. Where can I get an Earth Day T-shirt? Does EPA sell Earth Day T-shirts?
EPA does not distribute an official Earth Day T-shirt nor does EPA officially endorse anybody else's Earth Day T-shirt or any other products. Sometimes, local community and/or environmental organizations produce Earth Day T-shirts. You may want to check with groups organizing Earth Day activities in you community to learn who will be selling T-shirts this year.
