In September 2007, the 5th grade students at West Chester, Pennsylvania's Glen Acres Elementary school, along with their art teacher, Mrs. Linda Glaum, began this Public Art Project to bring awareness to the problem of litter in our community. There are 12 banners which have designs on both sides. Each 24-inch by 60-inch banner was painted by the students with acrylic paint, and outlined with permanent marker.
The students began by brainstorming ideas about litter, and by viewing anti-litter posters and slogans from all around the world. They talked about images and words that could be incorporated into the designs. Artists were suggested for inspiration. Every student created their banner design on 8 1/2 by 14-inch paper, then enlarged that design to 1/4 size of the real banner, and painted it with tempera. Each group looked at the designs from their table and along with their teacher combined the best elements from each design to create a collaborative image for their banner. The designs were transferred onto the vinyl surface with pencil and were then painted by the students. The entire process took about four months to complete.
To date, the banners have been featured at the West Chester Public Library and West Chester University.
See if you can find the banners that have been influenced by artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh, Sonia Delaunay, Pablo Picasso, Edward Hicks, Marc Chagall, and Henri Rousseau.
