MultiMedia Inspections
An on site inspection is the primary method used by EPA and the States to determine if a facility is in compliance with environmental laws and regulations. EPA Regional Federal Facility Coordinator, media program staff and the States work together to plan and conduct inspections. There are four types of environmental compliance inspections conducted at Federal Facilities:
- single media
- single media with check lists for other programs
- inspections covering several media
- comprehensive multimedia inspections.

The selection of a Federal Facility for a multi-media inspection is based on several criteria. National environmental initiatives, regional strategic initiatives, geographic priorities and the compliance history of the facility are all factors that contribute to the targeting and selection of a facility for a multi-media inspection. Examples of Region III program inspection checklists are listed below and can be accessed by opening the links provided.
These checklist examples may change from time to time and are offered
here as samples to guide regulated agencies in the inspection process
and, assist in the self-monitoring process found in Environmental Management
Systems (EMS)
