EPA Reduction Programs

Federal Electronic Challenge (FEC): Used and obsolete electronics devices, such as computers, printers, mobile phones, and fax machines, are part of an increasing and complex waste stream that poses challenging environmental management problems for Federal facilities. Electronic products contain a variety of hazardous constituents. Cathode ray tubes, circuit boards, batteries, and other electronic components often contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. This growing and changing waste stream presents new challenges and responsibilities in designing and managing products to reduce the environmental impacts associated with each phase of the electronics life cycle—acquisition and procurement, operation and maintenance, and end-of-life management. Reducing and recycling elecrtonic equipment to conserve materials, reduce environmental impact, and save landfill space. The RCC at Region 3 is available for DoD support services. http://www.federalelectronicschallenge.net/  Exit EPA Click for Disclaimer Adobe PDF Presentation (25pp, 507K, about pdf)

Waste Minimization: Waste Minimization of Priority Chemicals is a voluntary national effort to reduce the quantity and toxicity of hazardous waste, emphasizing in the most persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals. The objective of the EPA Region 3 Waste Minimization Program is to help hazardous waste generators minimize or eliminate their waste at the source. The National Partnership for Environmental Priorities Program (NPEP) encourages public and private organizations to form voluntary partnerships with EPA that reduce the use or release of any of 31 Priority Chemicals (e.g. lead, mercury, naphthalene, PCBs). Some highlights for the call are: Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC) goals for Waste Minimization, Region III Waste Minimization team support services, National Partnership for Environmental Priorities Program (NPEP) Program and Federal Facilities as NPEP Partners. http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/minimize/fedfac.htm    Adobe PDF Presentation (17pp, 1060K, about pdf)

Construction & Demolition Debris ( C & D): Reducing and recycling of C & D debris to conserve materials, reduce environmental impact of producing new materials, and save landfill space is another area of focus for the Region. EPA is currently working on establishing a comprehensive baseline for C & D generation and recycling rates, guidance documents and toolkits, workshops and outreach. Region 3 is available for DoD support services.    Adobe PDF Presentation (6pp, 69K, about pdf)
