Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement - 2005

The Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) on mountaintop mining was initially written in 2003. Public comments were accepted until January 21, 2004. Some comments were submitted in writing while others were given orally during the two public hearings. The first hearing was in July 2003 in Hazard, Kentucky. The second hearing was in July 2003 in Charleston, West Virginia. More than 83,500 comments were received on this document. A subsequent Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) was produced in 2005.
