Philadelphia Management Corp. settles lead-based paint violations at rental properties (04/18/07) The Philadelphia Management Corporation paid a civil penalty of $47,278 to settle alleged violations of federal lead-based paint disclosure requirements at two pre-1978 Philadelphia rental properties. The company will also comply with EPA's lead disclosure rule. "EPA's goal is to ensure that renters and buyers receive adequate information necessary to protect public health, especially children's health, from potential lead-based paint hazards," said Abraham Ferdas, EPA's director of waste and chemicals management. Philly public schools to undergo voluntary environmental review (03/13/07) The School District of Philadelphia is the first public school district in the nation to voluntarily sign up for a comprehensive environmental health check of its school buildings under an agreement with EPA. The agreement is part of a national initiative by EPA to ensure that schools, colleges and universities meet environmental regulations. "By agreeing to self-police their environmental compliance, the Philadelphia public schools will reap positive benefits for students, teachers, and the environment," said Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh. "Their commitment to correct any deficiencies they find will lead to healthier school environments across the city." Press Release
EPA ATTORNEY DISCUSSES PIVOTAL UST CASE AT CONFERENCE
EPA attorney Ben Fields gave a presentation on the Euclid of Virginia, Inc. underground storage tank (UST) case, at the Annual National Tanks Conference in San Antonio, Tx. He discussed the record $3.1 civil penalty; the broad scope of the investigation; the large number of violations; the close cooperation during the litigation between the Mid-Atlantic Region and the states where the violations took place; and the documentary evidence that allowed EPA to prove its case. EPA PUBLISHES NEW GUIDELINES FOR THE NATIONAL NONPOINT SOURCE
PROGRAM EPA has published new
guidelines for the National Nonpoint Source (NPS) Program
implemented under section 319 of the Clean Water Act. The guidelines focus
approximately one-half of section 319 funding on the remediation of impaired
waters through the development of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), and
the development and implementation of watershed-based plans.
