Main Street Well Field site is 15 wells on 10 acres of land. It's the largest of three well fields owned by the city of Elkhart and supplies 70 percent of the drinking water for Elkhart residents. To address ground water contamination an air stripper system was constructed. Air stripping forces air through polluted ground water to remove contamination. Later a soil vapor extraction system was constructed to separate and remove contaminants from soil. The soil evaporation system removed about 2,300 pounds of TCE. The extraction system ended when soil clean up goals were achieved.

EPA completed the five-year review of both Operable Unit 1 and 2 of the Main Street Well Field site. The cleanup included installing an alternative water supply, an air stripper, a soil vapor extraction system, interceptor wells, ground water monitoring and long-term controls that protects the city of Elkhart's well field and aquifer. The review found that the cleanup protects people and the environment. Land use restrictions have not been put in place on a property east of the well field and land restrictions on another property east of the well field may need to be updated. A contaminated ground water plume, which is a mass of contamination in ground water, has remained constant and has not moved off the site. Upon completely putting in place all institutional long term controls the cleanup will protect human health in the long term.
