Background

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency resumed its cleanup of the Little Scioto River in Marion, Ohio in 2006. The river is contaminated with creosote suspected to have come from the disposal practices at the former Baker Wood Creosoting facility.

Workers drained and dredged a 3/4-mile stretch of river. Then the area was being backfilled with clean soil. After the sediment was removed, it was placed on a pad to dry at a location just east of the cleanup area before it was shipped for disposal in Bucyrus, Ohio.

This phase will run up to the intersection of State Route 95. The work was funded by EPA ($2 million) and Ohio EPA ($1 million) and was completed in November 2006. Although cleanup is still needed along the river south to State Route 739, funding is uncertain at this time.

The project was originally started in 2002 and paid for by the U.S. Coast Guard’s Oil Pollution Act funds. About 1 mile of the river was dredged when USCG decided that EPA should pay for the rest of the cleanup.) involved in the risk assessment.

A Community Advisory Group (CAG) is a way the community can get involved. Learn more about CAGs.
