Take part in the Secchi Dip-In

From June 27 to July 19, people throughout the country are invited to Dip-In and take part in water monitoring activities designed to raise awareness about local water issues.

Coordinated by Kent State University and sponsored by EPA, the Secchi Dip-in is designed to rally volunteers to get out into their local rives, lakes and streams to test the transparency and overall quality of water. The goal is to raise people’s awareness of their local water quality by engaging them to take part in the monitoring process.

Volunteers use the Secchi Disk, which is a small disk with alternating black and white quadrants, to test the turbidity, or visibility, of water and depth levels. This easy-to-use tool enables everyone from children to adults to participate in the process.

Information collected from Secchi monitoring activities is submitted to a national database now containing more than 30,000 sampling records for more than 6,000 individual waterbodies throughout the nation. The participation of citizens in understanding local water quality issues is key to pollution prevention.
