Sustainable Communities Start Here: EPA Engages with Stakeholders at National Brownfields Conference
EPA Region 7 participated in the Brownfields 2009 Conference in New Orleans, La., on Nov. 16-18, 2009. The conference theme was "Sustainable Communities Start Here." Region 7 was represented by staff from the brownfields, hazardous waste, and air and waste management programs. EPA staff interacted with conference attendees from communities across Region 7 and other EPA regions. A Regional Administrators' Open House was held during the conference, which provided Region 7 staff an opportunity to interface with grantees and other stakeholders. The conference was well-attended with many opportunities to network and provide support to attendees.

Since its inception in 1995, EPA’s Brownfields Program has grown into a proven, results-oriented program that has changed the way contaminated property is perceived, addressed, and managed. EPA's Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.
