Recovery Funding to Assess and Clean Up Brownfields

Brownfields Program - EPA's Brownfields program is a proven, results-oriented program that has changed the way contaminated property is perceived, addressed and managed in Region 7. The Brownfields program encourages redevelopment of abandoned and contaminated waste sites littered throughout community after community. Brownfields Program in Region 7 - Since the beginning of EPA's Brownfields program in 1995, more than $66 million has been provided to Region 7 states, tribes, and communities to assess, clean up and return land to productive uses. Since 1995, EPA's Brownfields assistance in Region 7 has leveraged more than $898 million in cleanup and redevelopment funding and more than 3,126 jobs in cleanup, construction, and redevelopment. Last year (2008), EPA Region 7 provided about $8 million for Brownfields programs to the four Region 7 states, which included $3.4 million for state response programs, $2.6 million for Iowa communities, $1.47 million for Missouri communities, $200,000 for Kansas communities, and $220,000 for Nebraska communities.
In addition, since 1995, $1.2 million in EPA Brownfields Job Training Grant funds have helped provide training for over 250 workers in Region 7 to learn skills that translate to well-paying jobs.
Recovery Act of 2009 - The Recovery Act will direct $100 million nationwide to continue the important work of assessing and cleaning properties, redeveloping neighborhoods, training professionals and creating skilled jobs. This grant money will be allocated to projects based on a competitive review of project proposals.
