Community Meeting Regarding Resampling and New In-Home Water Treatment Systems
Highway 218 Perchlorate Site, Hills, Iowa

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 invites the public to participate in a community meeting on Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at the community center from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the community about upcoming activities related to the Highway 218 Perchlorate Site (Hills, Iowa).

SITE UPDATE

EPA is proposing to install Point-of-Use Reverse Osmosis (POU RO) treatment systems in residences affected by perchlorate groundwater contamination to provide clean drinking water. Approximately 25 homes will receive the RO units. Once the systems are installed and operational, the delivery of bottled water to all residences currently receiving bottled water will no longer be needed. The RO units that are to be installed will be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation and American National Standards.

Since September 2003, EPA has been providing bottled water to 26 residences (currently). Each residential location that has a well affected by perchlorate contamination above health-based levels, will be provided a temporary (2 to 3 years), convenient safe supply of drinking water with the use of these RO units. EPA will analyze water samples before and after the installation of the RO units.

COMMUNITY MEETING

EPA will hold a community meeting to provide information and answer questions regarding upcoming sampling activities and the installation of new in-home water treatment systems at the Highway 218 Perchlorate Site (Hills, Iowa). The meeting will be held:

The RO treatment system consists of a treatment train made up of a sediment filter, a biological filter, a carbon filter, and RO membrane, a storage tank and piping valves. Periodic maintenance is required including filter and membrane replacement, sanitization, leak checking and repair, and performance monitoring.

The POU treatment systems are necessary to replace bottled water as a mid-term (2 to 3 years), alternate water supply until a permanent alternate water supply becomes available. EPA anticipates that the treatment systems will be installed within the next two months.
