EPA grant recipient receives the 2008 Göteborg Award for sustainable development
11/26 -- Dr. Theo Colborn, a recipient of an EPA grant to study chemical exposures
associated with gas development, has received the prestigious Göteborg Award.
The award was founded in 1999 by the Swedish city of Göteborg to encourage
strategic work for national and international sustainable development. Dr.
Colborn has worked over the past 20 years to develop knowledge about the health
impacts of endocrine disruptors, manmade chemicals that act like hormones
in the human endocrine system. More information.
Water treatment plant to help restore water quality and trout fishery
11/19 -- The Town of Breckenridge and Summit County, Colo., have begun operating
a state-of-the-art treatment plant at the Wellington Oro Mine site in French
Gulch. The plant will remove zinc and cadmium from an abandoned mine seep that
is the biggest source of pollution in the Upper Blue River, improving water
quality and aquatic habitat for six miles downstream. Town

Grants help students spread sustainable practices, quality of life abroad
11/13 -- A student-led project at Fort Lewis College is among 43 innovative
projects supported by EPA's People, Prosperity and the Planet program. The Fort
Lewis students are developing biogas cook stoves for rural villages in Ecuador.

"Wetlands and Wonder" video
11/4 -- As more Americans dwell in cities and suburbs, our society becomes increasingly distanced from the natural world. The absence of everyday connections to nature has many negative effects -- especially for children. EPA Region 8 has partnered with well-known authors Richard Louv and Robert Michael Pyle, and child advocate Joan Allmon, to produce a 12-minute video on the importance of urban wetlands in maintaining our connection with nature.
