EPA-Established TMDLs in Progress
Although most TMDLs are adopted by states, territories, or authorized tribes and then approved by EPA, EPA also establishes TMDLs in some cases if:
- EPA disapproves TMDLs submitted by states, territories, or authorized tribes
- States, territories, or authorized tribes do not submit TMDLs in a timely manner
- EPA is required to do so pursuant to litigation settlements or judicial orders
- States ask EPA to establish TMDLs for a particular water body

EPA is currently in the process of developing TMDLs for several waters in California. EPA is developing these TMDLs in cooperation with the State of California, pursuant to consent decrees which require EPA to establish certain TMDLs for water bodies in California.
Draft documents for EPA-established TMDLs will be posted here when they become available.

Finalized documents for EPA-established TMDLs are also available.
Lost River Nitrogen and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) TMDLs - Draft for public review –
Comment period closed
EPA is soliciting public comments on proposed Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for Nitrogen and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) for several water bodies in the Lost River watershed. (Please see public notice and public draft TMDL document below.) EPA is establishing these Lost River TMDLs because California will not be adopting TMDLs by the schedule prescribed under a consent decree. The deadline for submitting comments on these draft TMDLs is closed.
Public Meeting - We are holding a public meeting on Monday, June 25th in the evening, to provide an opportunity for you to learn more about the proposed Lost River Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for Nitrogen and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) in California. The purpose of the meeting is to help interested parties understand the proposed TMDLs. The meeting will be an informal session for discussion and question and answer.
