Anaerobic Transformation Processes

The release of oxidizable organic compounds into the subsurface and ground water quickly drives the local environment anoxic. Under anaerobic conditions, most organics continue to degrade by oxidative transformations, although the apparent rate may be slower. However, anaerobic microbial consortia may also reductively modify organic and inorganic compounds. These transformations are potentially useful as novel remediation technologies and as important processes in developing our understanding of subsurface ecology. Research is in progress to examine the anaerobic transformation of various organic and inorganic compounds and metals, and to develop remediation technologies based on these transformations.
