Biography
Dr. Jorgensen's research program is multidisciplinary, holistic thinking, and features teamwork and collaboration. Co-investigators include zoologists, range scientists, physiologists, soil scientists, biogeochemists, and microbiologists from USGS, Universities, DoD, and several States in addition to Federal personnel. This group has been actively investigating risk associated with chronic exposure of ecosystems to low levels of nitrate, particularly related to atmospheric nitrate deposition, ecosystem interactions and feedback, and aquatic/terrestrial interactions. Dr. Jorgensen has been a primary developer of the Agency's research agenda RE: Ecosystem Restoration. Development of this program has involved a significant effort of representation, consensus building, and collaboration within EPA and among other Federal Agencies, State governments, and universities. He is beginning a new research area that is seeking to incorporate ecological values into Brownfields restorations and redevelopments. Dr. Jorgensen has more than 50 papers either published or in review concerning ecological modeling, mammalian ecology and diversity, ecosystem management and restoration, soil science and biogeochemistry, and avian, herpetofauna, and plant community ecology.
