Biography
Mary E. Gonsoulin is a Microbiologist in GWERD's Applied Research and Technical Support Branch. Dr. Gonsoulin has a B.S. in Medical Technology and Microbiology, a M.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Microbiology/Biochemistry from Mississippi State University. Previously, she worked as Chief Microbiologist for the Mississippi State Chemical Laboratory, as a Research Chemist/Microbiologist for the Tennessee Valley Authority, Florence, AL, and as a Research Associate Microbiologist at Utah State University.
For the past several years, Dr. Gonsoulin has been involved in research programs pertaining to microbial leaching of heavy metals, and bioremediation of soils contaminated with pesticides, at the Tennessee Valley Authority, Muscle Shoals, AL. She served as a project coordinator and supervisor for staff and graduate students involved in conducting laboratory and field- scale research projects at Utah State University, Logan, UT. She has been involved in providing technical support to EPA Regions and States concerning various proposed remediation plans at hazardous waste sites; the effects over time of high temperature on indigenous microbial populations; and GWERD in-house research in support of risk based ecosystem management/restoration practices.
Dr. Gonsoulin is currently involved in conducting ecological survey studies of beaches, leachate areas, and effluent areas on a seasonal basis at Lake Texoma, OK to identify potential adverse ecological effects due to natural and human induced factors. She is also involved in providing technical support for monitored natural attenuation work plans submitted for review and for natural attenuation short courses taught by the GWERD.
