Biography

Ralph D. Ludwig is a member of the Applied Research and Technology Support Branch and has a B.Sc. in Biology and M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from McGill University (Canada). He has previously worked in the Site Remediation Division of Environment Canada's Wastewater Technology Center and at DOE's Idaho National Engineering Laboratory.

Since joining the Robert S. Kerr Environmental Research Laboratory in 1998, Dr. Ludwig has provided technical assistance to EPA regional offices and conducted field research on the application of novel permeable reactive barrier (PRB) systems and in situ redox treatment zones for passive treatment of groundwater contaminants. He has also served as a speaker/instructor at permeable reactive barrier short courses.

Dr. Ludwig's current projects include the pilot application and evaluation of a combined compost/iron filings PRB system to treat heavy metals, arsenic, and ferrous iron acidity at an acid rock drainage site, the pilot application and evaluation of a ferrous iron based reductant to treat solid phase and dissolved phase hexavalent chromium contamination, and the evaluation of pilot and full-scale cow manure and wood chip based PRB systems to treat heavy metals and arsenic.
