Robert W. Puls is the Director of Research for the Ground Water and Ecosystems Restoration Division of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory in Ada, Oklahoma. Prior to his current position, he was Chief of the Subsurface Remediation Branch in the same Division. He has been employed by the USEPA since 1987 and rose to Senior Research Soil Scientist within the Division in 1998. Before coming to work for USEPA, Dr. Puls worked at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hanford Site doing research related to the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. His research has focused on the transport, fate and remediation of inorganic contaminants in ground-water systems, in particular, innovative in situ, passive methods to remediate contaminated ground water. He has received funding for his work from USEPA, DOE, Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Coast Guard. His research projects have typically involved multi-agency collaborative efforts among the following institutions: U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Depart of Defense, DOE, Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council, University of Oklahoma, University of Waterloo, and various industrial partners. Dr. Puls has authored / co-authored more than 100 research articles, book chapters, reports and proceedings.

Dr. Puls is Co-Chair of the USEPA’s Permeable Reactive Barrier Action Team , one of seven Action Teams comprising EPA’s Remedial Technology Development Forum (RTDF). He has been actively involved in research related to permeable reactive barriers since 1991. His recent publications have covered a range of topics including ground water sampling, the development and evaluation of in situ remediation techniques for soils and ground water, and metal transport and transformation studies in subsurface systems. He has served on several scientific advisory committees for the USGS, U.S. Department of Agriculture, DOE, and the National Research Council. Dr. Puls has a B.S. in Soil Science and Natural Resources from the University of Wisconsin, a Masters from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. in Soil and Water Science from the University of Arizona. He has more than 25 years experience working in the environmental science field.
