Status Report for the Week of April 24, 2008
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
Technical Assistance to Region I: On March 26, 2008, Dr. Scott Huling
(GWERD) provided RPM Joseph Lemay and On-Scene Coordinator Frank Gardner
with technical review comments on a proposed in-situ chemical oxidations
remedial activity at the Wells G&H Superfund Site in Woburn, MA. There
are several technical issues that should be re-evaluated that could
result in significant progress in achieving remedial objectives. Issues
which are discussed in detail include the need to prepare a conceptual
model, effective delivery of the oxidant to the contaminated zones,
volume of MnO4- solution injected into each well, and the rationale for
this round of injection locations.

Technical Assistance to Region IV: On April 9, 2008, Dr. Eva Davis
(GWERD) provided Section Chief David Williams with review comments on
documents related to the electric resistance heating (ERH) system to
remediate TCE in ground water at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in
Paducah, KY. General comments were concerned with the results of a
ground-water modeling effort, target temperatures, asymptotic TCE
recovery, and phasing the implementation of the remediation. Detailed
specific comments were provided on a number of issues including the
construction phase of the project. Specific concerns were expressed
with respect to adherence to normal electrical safety codes.
