Status Report for the Week of March 24, 2008

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Technical Assistance to Region II: In a continuing technical assistance effort at the Cortese Landfill Superfund Site in Narrowsburg, NY, Steven Acree (GWERD) and Dr. Bruce Pivetz (Shaw Env.) provided RPM Mark Granger with review comments on the Source Characterization Report. The March 11, 2008, comments note that the report provides a large amount of data and information for characterizing contaminant distribution at the site. The overall conclusion is that the contaminants are widely spread with a significant mass in the source area. It was suggested that the quantitative results of contaminant mass and calculated parameter values should be considered estimates due to the assumptions and extrapolations used in the calculations. Technical Assistance to Region IX: On March 10, 2008, Dr. Eva Davis (GWERD) provided RPM Gary Riley with a review of a variety of documents relating to whether thermal remediation may be applicable to recover PCBs present in the subsurface at the Westinghouse Sunnyvale Superfund Site in Sunnyvale, CA. It appears that there are areas of heavy PCB contamination where in-situ thermal remediation may be able to recover significant amounts of the contamination. Information was provided on the properties of the contaminants when considering different types of thermal remediation, a description of the in-situ technologies that have been used to address PCB-contaminated soil, a conceptual description of how they might be applied at the Westinghouse Sunnyvale Site based on site characteristics, and recommendations on additional information that would aid in evaluating the use of a thermal technology at this site. Technical Assistance to OSRTI: On March 11, 2008, Dr. Ann Keeley provided Linda Fiedler with review comments on the Draft Technical/Regulatory Guideline "In Situ Bioremediation of Chlorinated Ethene: DNAPL Source Zones." Although many of the suggestions dealt with editorial issues, the more salient comments concerned technical concepts such as the benefit of obtaining geochemical data, and the ratio of electron donors to the mass of chlorinated solvent. It was also suggested that a section be added concerning the value of pre-demonstration tracer studies. (Misc.)
