2003 Council Grants:

Girl Scouts of Lake Erie Council

Project Title: Women in the Wilderness - Developing Future Outdoor Leaders

Project Description: As an affiliate for the Wilderness Education Association, Girl Scouts of Lake Erie Council offers girls year round program opportunities in a variety of wilderness settings incorporating the WEA 18-point curriculum. Girls learn basic judgement and decision-making skills, leadership, minimum impact camping and travel techniques, environmental ethics, and other points using the WEA curriculum. These program opportunities offer additional learning in specific land and water skills such as backpacking, and paddlesport instruction. Girls who participate in these programs gain skills and knowledge necessary to work in the outdoor industry and outdoor leadership positions. 2004 Council Grants:

Girl Scouts of Great Trail

Project Title: Ecology Exposition

Project Description: Girls helped plan a community event designed to provide awareness and hands-on activities about wildlife conservation, natural resources, wetlands, and the environment, with a specific focus on watershed protection and restoration and careers. Many agencies and organizations were invited to present. Girls from three inner city school
systems were targeted and the entire membership was invited. The project linked Girl Scouts to local projects such as a community service day and the Nimishillen Creek Clean-up project that are designed to support the community’s Watershed Action Plan. They plan to make this an annual event.

Girl Scouts of Heart of Ohio

Project Title:Project FUN (Families Understanding Nature)

Project Description: Girl Scout Camp Falls Run was enhanced by utilizing the site’s natural setting and developing a progressive wildlife observation plan. Girls 11- 17 and volunteers along with federal agency expertise: designed and
constructed a 16’ x 64” wildlife observation deck; developed Tree Haven Nature Trail; constructed and planted a small wetlands environment and observation deck; planned and ran the first FUN Day event; and created program resource
kits to be checked out by troops and groups for environmental studies at Camp Falls Run. Girls learned about native plants, trail design and development, erosion prevention, trail accessibility and aesthetics, planting techniques for trees and herbaceous plants, native wildlife, and the interrelationships within the ecosystem. An increase in usage of the site is reported and the council plans to replicate the FUN Day event in 2005 at another Girl Scout property.

2005 Council Grants:

Girl Scouts of Appleseed Ridge

Project Title: Wetlands Alive

Project Description: Girls researched, planned, and designed year one of a multi-year plan to create a diverse wetland lab located on a council camp property. The property consists of wetlands, prairie land, mature forests, emerging forests and a geo-sink. This acreage has been given a permanent environmental easement by the council. A wetlands boardwalk and education program was created. Girls and the community benefited by this project through participation in environmental education, career exploration, opportunities for recreational walking, access for research, as well as education for local land owners about the benefits of preservation.
