2003 Council Grants:

Girl Scouts of the Black Hills

Project Title: Tripping Lightly

Project Description: Girl Scouts learned how to protect surface vegetation, organism communities, water bodies, aqua-environmental systems and how to leave natural features and cultural artifacts undisturbed. In the first component, girls ages 6-11 attended three Leave No Trace and outdoor skills trainings, culminating with a day hike in the Black Hills. The second component served girls ages 11-17 through four training sessions and a four-day backpacking trip in the Bighorn National Forest. In both components aquatic resource investigation, testing and research was an important focus. Girls also earned their Leave No Trace certification. Plans are in place to offer the program in the Summer of 2004.

2004 Council Grants:

Girl Scouts of Nyoda

Project Title: Prairie Ecosystem

Project Description: Permanent day camps were developed on USFWS land to give girls the opportunity to work on the prairie land, learn about field ecology, biological studies, interpretation of the prairie wetland region, become an
ambassador for the USFWS, and to explore careers. Programs were tailored to meet badge requirements and were advertised in camp brochures. Transportation was also offered to ensure participation of girls from 4 Native
American reservations. A two-day camp will be offered in 2005 for Girl Scouts ages 11-17.

2005 Council Grants:

Girl Scouts of Black Hills

Project Title: Great Girl Scout Fish Capade

Project Description: Girls studied water resource management in the Black Hills and participated in scientific data
collection; developed fishing skills on both ice and open water; and participated in a career mentoring opportunity. Girls tested the condition of the water, identified and examined caught fish, studied the cycle of fish life, planned an educational fishing event at a hatchery and interacted with women in environmental careers. Girls benefited by understanding how the abundant wildlife in their scenic state should be preserved and how they can be advocates in this area.

2006 Council Grants:

Girl Scouts of Black Hills

Project Title: Ecotones in U-Pods

Project Description: Girls will participate in ecosystem restoration by planting native trees at a local watershed, collecting samples, studying, and analyzing land and water habitat, and erosion. Girls will learn the critical importance of ecotones, the precarious transition areas between two ecosystems. They will become knowledgeable in the techniques of protecting surface vegetation, communities of organisms, water bodies (lakes/streams), and aqua-environmental systems. The watershed and erosion at Sheridan Lake will benefit through the work of the girls’ community service project.
