| Description | In 2007, the North Carolina General Assembly created the Methane Capture Pilot Program. Up to 50 swine farms may be selected to participate in the program. Once a farm is chosen and agrees to participate, it will fully or partially cover its waste lagoons, capture the methane produced, and use the captured methane to generate electricity. The state’s electric public utilities (i.e., Duke Energy, Progress Energy, and Dominion) are required to purchase the generated electricity for a period of seven years based on a price set by the North Carolina Utilities Commission. By law the price may not exceed 18 cents per kilowatt-hour. |
| Eligible Organizations | Livestock Producer |
| How to Apply | The Division of Soil and Water Conservation will oversee the pilot program's registration process. Swine producers wishing to participate must complete a simple, online application to be considered for the program. There is no obligation to participate when registering. |
