The Health Effects Institute (HEI) is an independent, nonprofit corporation whose mission it is to provide high-quality, impartial, and relevant science on the health effects of pollutants from motor vehicles and from other sources in the environment. Supported jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry, HEI has funded over 170 studies and published over 100 research reports, and several special reports, producing important research findings on the health effects of a variety of pollutants, including carbon monoxide, methanol and aldehydes, nitrogen oxides, diesel exhaust, ozone, and most recently, particulate air pollution.

The International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) provides a forum for the discussion of problems unique to the study of health and the environment; one of its missions is to support epidemiological studies on the health effects of environmental exposures. Membership is open to environmental epidemiologists and other scientists worldwide.

COMEAP is an Advisory Committee in the United Kingdom of independent experts that provides advice to government departments and agencies on all matters concerning the potential toxicity and effects upon health of air pollutants. The group is currently tasked to advise the UK Health Departments on the effects on health of both outdoor and indoor air pollutants on the basis of data currently available; to assess the need for further research; and to liaise as necessary with other government bodies to assess the effects of exposure and associated risks to human health.

As the lead public health agency responsible for implementing the health-related provisions of Superfund (the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980), ATSDR is charged with assessing health hazards at specific hazardous waste sites, helping to prevent or reduce exposure and the illnesses that result, and increasing knowledge and understanding of the health effects that may result from exposure to hazardous substances.

The National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA), a major component of the Office of Research and Development (ORD) with headquarters in Washington, DC, is EPA's national resource center for human health and ecological risk assessment. NCEA conducts risk assessments, carries out research to improve the state-of-the-science of risk assessment, and provides guidance and support to risk assessors.

The National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory is the Agency's focal point for scientific research on the effects of contaminants and environmental stressors on human health and ecosystem integrity. Its research mission and goals help the Agency to identify and understand the processes that affect our health and environment, and helps the Agency to evaluate the risks that pollution poses to humans and ecosystems. The impact of NHEERL's efforts can be felt far beyond the EPA, by enabling state and local governments to implement effective environmental programs, assisting industry in setting and achieving environmental goals, and collaborating with international governments and organizations on issues of environmental importance.
