Objective
- Describe the characteristics of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride.
![]()
Hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride are acid gases that can be released from chemical reactors, mineral production operations, acid production, electronics manufacturing, and ore roasting operations. They can also be generated in combustion processes or oxidizers of chlorine- or fluorine-containing materials. The chemical formulas are HCl and HF. They are gases at the normal stack concentrations; however, at very high concentrations, HCl can nucleate homogeneously to form submicrometer acid mist particles. Both hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride are extremely soluble in aqueous liquids. Hydrogen chloride is considered to be a strong acid and hydrogen fluoride is classified as a weak acid. Due to their acidic properties, they are strong irritants.
