The MMG leads the development and implementation of effective control strategies and regulations
governing primary and secondary metals production and minerals processing operations. The Group
develops and implements innovative strategies to reduce hazardous and criteria air pollutant
emissions, including the use of market-based mechanisms, alternative technologies, processes,
and compliance options, as well as regulatory and economic incentives to achieve environmental
goals of the air program. The MMG is also responsible for:
- Completing appropriate ongoing regulatory efforts for these sectors under the Clean Air Act for MACT,
area sources, residual risk, and new source performance standards;
- Conducting comprehensive analyses of these industry sectors to identify opportunities for multi-pollutant
emission reductions and cost effective control strategies and process alternatives to fulfill national air program objectives;
- Reviewing and assessing existing regulatory requirements for these sectors to reduce conflicts and redundancies
among the various requirements while achieving equivalent or better environmental outcomes; and
- Developing and maintaining technical and policy expertise to solve air pollution problems related to
these industry sectors on a regional, national and international scale.
