Introduction
EPA's Web-based information resources are extensive and deep, comprising more than 300 areas and approximately approximately one million pages of html text and PDF files. Growing every day, it contains a vast amount of environmental information and serves many audiences, ranging from elementary school kids to the general public to Ph.D. environmental researchers. The site also features Web areas in Spanish (Recursos en Español,) and Chinese, and selected publications in Korean and Vietnamese.
The sections discussed in this Web area include Browse EPA Topics; Search; EPA Newsroom; Laws, Regulations and Dockets; Where You Live; Information Sources; Educational Resources; and About EPA and Programs (under the heading Organizational Structure). With the exception of Search, all of these sections can be found in the blue left-side bar on the EPA home page. Search is located on the top of each page.
All Web pages within the EPA Web site are required to conform to EPA design standards. The basic EPA template includes the blue header across the top, the blue left side-bar with links to the main site features, the EPA seal, and the light blue right-side bar with site highlights. The EPA seal is clickable and takes the user back to the home page.
www.epa.gov was initially structured by program office (e.g. the Office of Air), but EPA is currently in the process of changing to a topic-based structure. Thus, most pages within a site are oriented around a single environmental topic (e.g. air and radiation, water, pesticides, etc.). www.epa.gov has built-in redundancy, specific tools or pieces of information that can be accessed in several different ways.
EPA librarians are the most valuable source of information about the EPA site. They can be contacted at public-access@epa.gov. Contact information for the respective regional libraries and service centers can be found by clicking on the EPA National Library Network link under Information Sources and in the Library Contacts section of this site.
