The GloED Database Editor

Click here to view a screen capture of GloED's Database Editor.

The Database Editor screen is the most comprehensive screen in the GloED software. From this screen the user can:

Data Reviewing
GloED allows the viewing of any data that it contains. First, the user defines the piece of data to be reviewed. This can be done by using the advance/reverse buttons at the bottom left of the screen (single and double arrowheads), or by using the Seek button. By mouse-clicking a forward or reverse arrowhead, the screen will advance one record at a time, and the various fields on the editor screen will change to display the appropriate data for that record. By clicking on the double arrow keys, the user can advance ten records at a time. By keeping the mouse key depressed on a double arrow key, the rate at which the user advances through the records accelerates. This allows the entire GloED record set (currently about 30,000 records) to be traversed within a few seconds. Once a record is located, the user can review any of the information in that record.

By clicking on the "file drawer" icon to the right of the Dataset, Country, Sector, Fuel, or Pollutant fields, the user can view the categories within that field. For example, clicking on the Dataset file box icon will display Motor Vehicles, Landfills, Minor CH4 Sources, Fuelwood Combustion, etc. Clicking on one of the entries will display the "Short Name" of the field (e.g., Motor Vehicles) and the "Long Name." The Long Name is generally more descriptive (e.g., Exhaust and Evaporative Pollutants Emitted by Motor Vehicles). In addition, the "Country Entry" dialog screen will display the population, GDP (gross domestic product, in dollars), and the year of these data.

Clicking the file drawer icon of the Sector or Fuel fields opens a dialog box that gives short name, long name, and a scroll box containing the emission sources associated with the dataset. The hierarchical structure, selection, and presentation are the same as described in Generating an Emissions Estimate. After the data record is defined, the user can click on [OK] to view the numerical data associated with the record.

Data Seeking
Because of the large number of records in GloED, even the "express-find" feature can be tedious if the user does not know the location, or record address, of the information that is needed. The Seek feature is selected when the user knows the data needed but not its address within the record set. To use this feature, the user simply defines two or more of the alpha fields (those associated with file cabinet icons) and then clicks the Seek button at the bottom of the screen. GloED then finds the record closest to the combination selected.

Data References
It is important to know the basis for the individual emission factor, activity data, and emissions data in order to perform an adequate evaluation. Because of this, each "Activity," "Factor," and "Emission" field is accompanied by icons for reference and notes. By clicking on the reference icon, indicated by a row of books, the user can view the reference for that individual piece of data. By clicking on the notes icon, indicated by a pad and pencil, the user can view the notes placed by the person entering the data. The notes field is especially useful when two or more pieces of data are used along with an algorithm to generate the number in the field, or to provide the basis of an estimate when no valid data are available.

The user can modify an existing record by clicking on the data field and changing the entry and then clicking on the [Modify] button at the bottom of the screen, or the record can be erased by clicking on the [Delete] button. After a record is removed, the status field of the screen changes from "Active" to "Deleted."

Data Entry
A very useful feature of GloED is the ability to integrate new data into the system. Each of the five alpha fields offers a selection of "New" in each data group in its hierarchy. Clicking on the New selection clears the "Short Name" and "Long Name" fields and allows the entry of new data. After one or more of these fields is modified, the user can modify one or more of the numeric fields. After all modifications are made, the user can click on the [Add] button, then the [OK] button, and the information record(s) will be added to GloED. The new record(s) will be available for constructing scenarios exactly like the data resident in GloED.
