In Figure 4 (Cylinder pressure gauge), the pressure gauge on the cylinder filled with compressed gas reads 300 psig. Is this the absolute pressure or relative pressure in the cylinder?

Answer: The gauge pressure is a relative pressure because it compares the gas pressure in the cylinder to the pressure of the atmosphere. In fact, the gauge pressure is often denoted by the letter "g" or simply by adding the word "gauge." For example, the gas pressure inside the gas cylinder in the previous question could be expressed as 300 psig or as 300 psi (gauge). Likewise, the absolute pressure of the gas in the cylinder can be expressed as either psia (where "a" denoted absolute) or as psi (absolute).
