Q icon #1
A person who weighs 120 lbf travels to a distant plant that has a gravitational force that is 1/20th that of Earth. What is the mass and weight of the person on this planet?
A icon
Answer: Mass = 119.9 lbm and weight = 6 lbf

Solution:
  1. Calculate the mass of the person. Mass is the same on Earth and the other planet.

    practice equation 1_a

    In American Engineering Units,

    practice equation 1_b

The acceleration due to gravity on Earth is 32.2 ft/sec2.

    practice equation 1_c

  2. Calculate the weight of the person on the other planet.

    practice equation 2_a

The acceleration due to gravity on the distant planet = (32.2 ft/sec2)/20.

    practice equation 2_b
